Makima takes Denji toward Tokyo and gives him food at a highway rest stop, deepening his immediate attachment to her. At Public Safety headquarters, she places him under the supervision of Aki Hayakawa, a serious Devil Hunter who believes Denji lacks the resolve needed for the work. During their first patrol, Aki beats Denji in an alley and urges him to quit before Devils kill him. Denji retaliates, insisting that his simple goals matter as much as anyone else's, and concludes that Aki is also interested in Makima. Makima refuses to separate them and orders Denji to live at Aki's apartment, where their incompatible habits quickly create tension. On a mission, Aki explains that Fiends are Devils possessing human corpses. Denji kills one without transforming, saying he wanted to avoid damaging its body, though Aki suspects his motives are less compassionate. Realizing he needs a concrete ambition, Denji decides that physical intimacy will be his next goal. Makima then introduces Power, the Blood Fiend, as Denji's new partner. Power immediately abandons procedure, leaps from a building, and kills the Sea Cucumber Devil with a blood-forged hammer.
