While Reg recovers from firing the Incinerator, Nanachi recounts meeting Mitty. Both were impoverished orphans recruited by the White Whistle Bondrewd and taken to Ido Front, his facility at the fifth layer’s bottom. Nanachi believed they would help explore the Abyss, but Bondrewd used them in an experiment that raised two people from the sixth layer together. The Curse was redirected unevenly: Nanachi became a Hollow able to perceive the force field, while Mitty lost her human form, mind, and ability to die. After Bondrewd repeatedly tested Mitty’s regeneration, Nanachi escaped with her and spent years unsuccessfully seeking a way to end her suffering. Reg accepts Nanachi’s request. Nanachi arranges Mitty’s belongings, says farewell, and remains beside her as the Incinerator destroys her completely. Riko later awakens and describes sensing Mitty’s release while unconscious. As Riko recovers, the three share food, bathe, remove the healing mushrooms, and build support equipment for her injured arm. Riko asks Nanachi to join the journey, and Nanachi agrees. They prepare supplies and send a mail balloon that eventually reaches Nat and Shiggy in Orth. At Ido Front, Bondrewd notices Mitty’s life signal disappear and anticipates Nanachi’s approach.
