Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school student in rural Itomori, and Taki Tachibana, a Tokyo student, begin waking in each other’s bodies on unpredictable days. They establish rules and leave messages so each can manage the other’s school, family, and social life. Their interference gradually improves both lives and creates an attachment, although they have never met. When the exchanges suddenly stop, Taki searches for Itomori using drawings from memory and discovers that the town was destroyed by a fragment of Comet Tiamat three years earlier, killing Mitsuha and many residents. At the Miyamizu family shrine, he drinks the kuchikamizake Mitsuha left as an offering and awakens in her body before the disaster. With Mitsuha’s friends Tessie and Sayaka, he plans an emergency evacuation. At twilight, Taki and Mitsuha briefly meet across their separated timelines, but they begin forgetting each other’s names. Mitsuha returns to town, confronts her estranged father, and secures an evacuation before impact. Years later, both live in Tokyo with a persistent sense that someone important is missing. After glimpsing one another on passing trains, they meet on a staircase and simultaneously ask each other’s name.
