Denji and Power visit Aki in the hospital and awkwardly report that, among their immediate teammates, only Kobeni survived the assault. After they leave, Aki finally breaks down over Himeno's death. Kurose and Tendo question whether he intends to continue hunting the Gun Devil despite his injuries and shortened lifespan. Aki chooses revenge, but the Fox Devil will no longer answer him, so they order him to make a stronger contract. Himeno's sister later brings Aki letters in which Himeno repeatedly expressed fear that his obsession would get him killed. Meanwhile, Makima introduces Denji and Power to Kishibe, the veteran hunter who trained Aki and Himeno. Declaring himself the strongest Devil Hunter, Kishibe repeatedly kills Denji and critically injures Power so they can learn to fight using their unusual durability and regeneration. After dozens of defeats, the pair decide that intelligence must be their answer. They prepare an elaborate ambush at Kishibe's apartment, but he immediately detects and defeats them again, while acknowledging some improvement. Kurose and Tendo take Aki into Public Safety's underground cells. There, he meets the Future Devil and is told that a contract with it is his best remaining option.
